You don’t even need to read the latest edition of Elevation to get information about the latest innovations in lift technology, even the mainstream media have picked up on the latest announcements from both ThyssenKrupp (MULTI) and Kone (Ultrarope).
But will these advances in technology really lead to goliath megastructures?
Will this be a Betamax vs VHS type battle?
Or will both systems have their own specific application?
MULTI ditches cables in favour of magnetic linear motor technology, to move the lift car both vertically and horizontally. They can operate in loops and aren’t limited by heights, so it’s easy to put multiple cars in to one shaft.
Ultrarope is a super-light rope with a carbon fibre core with a special high-friction coating. In an elevator travelling 500 meters, the lightweight rope cuts elevator moving mass by 60% compared to steel ropes. When travel heights are increased, even larger reductions can be achieved.
